The Mediator

Updated: Jan 19

Their world was once bright and beautiful, but they were destroying it. When we left them alone after helping them evolve, we didn't think they would come to this, so evil and destructive. Maybe it was our fault. That's why we went back to them and took one of them with us. They called her the Mediator, thinking she would save them all. But she didn't. She tried and even convinced my two sons, Maw and Wax. They told me what happened when I left them alone with her, how she convinced them. And I have to admit that if I'd been with them, she would have convinced me too. If only it hadn't already been too late, the Humans could have been saved.

The Spirit Ring, I don't know how they got it, but they had it. Every single one of them had it, it connected them all. Everyone could feel the coming of the End. She spoke when we weren't expecting her to. But before that, she showed my sons that Humans weren't all bad, that behind every bad action, there were two good ones, but that nobody ever talked about them. It almost killed her – the memory reader isn't made for Humans – but she did it anyway, and it was thanks to this that my sons sided with her.

When the Moment arrived, she spoke, delivering her speech through her Ring, for her people. And we didn't even know it. There she was, eyes fixed on her planet, despair coursing through her veins. With her Spirit Ring close to her mouth, she was already speaking to her people. We only discovered this later. Some Humans had left in what they called Arks, they were already far away, but they too possessed a Ring, and the Ring even works from one universe to another. Others waited on their ships for the End to come, seeing their planet alive until the last moment.

“My dear friends, my people. I'm sorry, so sorry. You elected me as Mediator for our cause, but I failed, and I'm sorry. Here they are beside me, forcing me to look down on you. It's torture to know that you won't survive … but I will. Inside, I'm already dead, we all are. But they don't know who we are, they don't know that we each have a Ring, and it's through this Ring that we'll find each other again one day, I promise you. The Moment is coming, the End is near. To those of you who have remained below, know this: we will avenge you, we will kill them all, for you, every last one of them. It won't save you, and I'm sorry, but vengeance will be our salvation. Those who have left will find each other again, in a year or in a thousand, that's a promise. Be strong, be fair, but above all, be human. Peaceful, but not passive. I love you all.”

A beautiful speech, I must admit, powerful and just… and deserved. We deserved their promise of revenge because it was because of us that they died, we admitted it. We didn't destroy their planet, only the parasites – it was quick and efficient. When the End came, the Mediator screamed, and we could feel her despair, and the Humans who had stayed to see the End screamed back, showing that they too possessed the Ring ! what a rarity, and yet every human being possessed one. We shouted at her to tell us how they could each have one when no one else in the Universe possessed so many, but she didn't answer. The Mediator kept shouting and shouting, then she fainted and didn't regain consciousness. She was alive, but unable to wake up. The Spirit Ring connects every soul; they think, live, and breathe with one voice. This is what will lead to our downfall. They've all felt it, the Moment as they later called it, they've felt the End, hence their promise of vengeance. We'll deserve it, just as they deserved their end.

It's the natural order of things, don't blame us, you would have done the same, and everyone would have. Who among you hasn't dreamed of killing your own creation? Everyone has, and some did. When Humans became monsters, it was up to us to deal with them, and look, many have survived even though they're forbidden to return to their planet.

They're exiles, and maybe they'll manage to survive for a few centuries. I don't know. Humans don't live as long as we do. Humans have been in exile for some time now. In human time? 12 generations exactly. What happened after the Moment is confusing. They fled, they felt the death of their people. A few days later, the Mediator fled aboard the Vessel The Resolved with Maw and Wax … I don't blame them, I've already said so.

Granted, our people considered us heroes, but not our neighbors. They called us murderers and said we'd committed genocide, and yes, it was true. It was inevitable! Their planet would rise stronger than ever. Yes, without the Humans, but they were destroying everything, Terra was dying. The only chance of survival was to act quickly or risk losing everything. The Moment didn't kill everyone, I told you, some survived. Where are they now? I don't know. Their lives are theirs now, and we're not responsible for them. We don't fear their vengeance, it will come one day, maybe soon, it doesn't matter. We've done our job.

I've finished – aren't you happy? Isn't this what you wanted? My testimony on the events that took place on Terra. You know everything, you said you'd let me go if I told you everything, I promised you the truth, and you got it, so why don't you set me free? Well… What, a weapon? Are you serious? Who are you? A Human…

So revenge is real.
